Leaders that appeal to me are the ones who succeed (or not) when facing opposition of some kind:
Abraham Lincoln (I know you didn't want presidents, but this guy is one you need to know)
Martin Luther King (active immediately after the murder of Metger Evers, leading to the Civil Rights Act of 1964)
FDR (rebuilt the country at the height of the depression and outstripped combined Japanese and German industrial capacity to win WW II--this show the world what the USA was capable of--he literally took us from our worst days in history to our best)

Joe Hill, born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund, and also known as Joseph Hillström (October 7, 1879 – November 19, 1915) was a radical songwriter, labor activist and member of the Industrial Workers of the World, also known as the Wobblies. He was executed for murder after a controversial trial. After his death, he became the subject of a folksong.
