Start with some form of BASIC - the BEGINNER'S All-purpose Symbolic Instructions Code...Visual BASIC.NET is the latest version, and there is a free version of that on Microsoft's website, the Express Edition. Check out http://www.pscode.com for great sample codes.

The most likely way to learn how to do this is through a class of some sort...or you can pick up some books on game programming. You need to know what you are looking for...some are made with java..some with flash...some with actual languages like c#,c++,vb, etc..

I would recomend looking into some game programming classes and if you don't want to attend then see what book they are using in the classes and purchase it.

first, learn the javascript and HTML they are really helpful and they like, are the building scructures for the other programming languages. they are also the easiest, since people dont really ise VBScript n3more.
then do basic stuff like making alerts and stuff. then yoyu will get into less than and more than, and then you can start making simple games such as guess the number. then you can start making visual effects and sllowly make games like at javascript.internet.com you will love that site

One of the other guys suggested starting off with something like C++. I disagree. I would start with something more like BASIC (you can probably find a free version on the internet, if not, it will be cheap to find a version to buy online). The reason for me suggesting BASIC is that it is a procedural language (as opposed to object-oriented, which is much more complex). You will eventually need to learn object-oriented programming (aka OOP), but to start off, I'd just do the procedural since it's easier. If you like that, you'll be able to pick up OOP later. There's just no sense starting off in OOP especially with a language with a steeper syntax learning curve like C++. Good luck!
