It is a symbol of status or wealth. Long ago, the cowrie shell was used as money in Africa, and now it isn't. So the cowrie shell, is now a symbol for wealth and or money status.

Many ancient civilizations used shells in their decor and also as a form of currency. Eskimos, coastal indians and coastal japanese. Coastal Central and South America. They were used because they were readily available and because they were considered to be beautiful.

Because its what was available to them at the time that they knew how to work with.
They also thought they were beautiful.
