To stop crude and rude "Peeping Tom's" from looking where they should not. Occassionally it is more comfortable, but mainly to stop perps.

So you don't get any free peeks... Also, I think socially back in the "old days", women wore dresses and skirts more often as pants were considered masculine. They were taught that good girls always cross their legs and are to act lady-like (discreet). The tradition just carries through the generations.

orginally, women only wore skirts so they crossed their legs to not expose certain body parts. Nowadays when women wear pants, its just seen as good manners and being lady-like when they cross their legs.

They do it to look sexy. Some use the excuse that it covers their privates but really, when you have a short skirt on and you cross your legs, you end up showing even more thigh then if you would have just sat with your legs closed.

It's more comfortable and more feminine. Women aren't supposed to sit with their legs 12 feet apart like men do... it's just the way it is.
