what is exactly the definetion of a democrat?

What do you view as a democrat, their beliefs, policies, what makes them stand out from republicans. I am a democrat, but I don't know why except that my dad is one, my mom is republican. I think I am a christian, but to choose one, I really want to know what exactly is that I am wanting to be.

ok I see what ya'll are saying, but I want to know really what is a democrat...its a simple question to a complex answer, so ony a person who truly is a democrat or is a nonbiased to democrats type of person can answer this, thank you!
