I almost left this for Geek49203 but s/he is misinformed about a couple of things:

1) You just have to do a Pediatrics residency after medical school, not an additional specialists school on top of your pediatrics residency. If I recall correctly, Peds residencies are 3 years long, which makes it 4 years college + 4 years of medical school + 3 years of residency (you're working as an underpaid and overworked doctor in a peds department) = 11 years

2) You don't have to go to UF to get into medical school. You can go to any undergrad college you want in Florida.

3) You won't study Bio and Chem for 4 years and "live in the labs". You have 1 year of Bio classes, 1 year of Chemistry classes. Each of those come with labs.

4) A lot of people drop out of premed, this is true. Nothing we can do about that -- only you. You have to decide if this is what you want.

5) Dose of reality: pediatrics residencies are not hard to get by any means whatsoever. Sure, there are some brilliant AOA people who go into Peds, but most are not like that. You can be at the bottom of your class with "ehh" letters of recommendation and get a Peds residency. It's the lowest paid, deals more with parents than babies, and a lot of medical students would rather be dermatologists or neurosurgeons.

So don't worry... if you make it through college and medical school, you can become a pediatrician.

Sigh...

First, a Pediatrician is a wonderful goal. God makes Pediatricians, and if you're created to be one, I hope you make your goal.

Second, you're at step one of maybe ten when you start college. In order to get to be a pediatrician (specialist) you have to graduate with a regular college degree, then graduate from med school, then do your residency, then go to specialists school. If my math is correct, that is about 12 years from now.

Sooo... what you need is a college that gets you into med school. You'd wanna look for a college that has such a great academic reputation that medical schools love their grads. You need to ask each college / university about their ability to get people into med school

You'll study bio and chem for 4 years, and live in the labs too, so check out those facilities when you visit each college.

Finally, you'll need to be happy in college. If you chose badly, you'll go to a place where you're miserable -- and your grades and health will suffer. Your MUST find a place where you fit in personality-wise.

Ohhh... one more thing.... 1/3 of my 25 frat pledge brothers were pre-med that first semester. One went to med school; 3 of the pre-med guys dropped out after their first year (2 of which flunked out). As I said... pediatricians are made by God....

UF has the best undergraduate program in Florida, by far! It is the top 50 in the country... FSU ranks in the 100s. UF also has a great reputation with med schools across the country.

Each med school usually has its own requirements for classes that you must take before applying. Here is UF's:

The University of Miami and University of Florida have the two best medical schools in the state. UM is super-expensive, UF is not. As an undergraduate you should major in biology or premed.
