Wifi is wireless Internet. All you need is a wireless Internet access point (and the pass code if it's a secure access point). Once connected you can play with people all over the world.

Here's the deal. PS3 uses only Broadband internet. You will need broadband to get your PS3 online. You could run an ethernet cable from your broadband modem from your service provider to the PS3's ehternet port to get online.. or since it is Wi-Fi.. meaning it will pick up signals wirelessly you can buy a wireless router. Simply plug the service provider's modem via ethernet into the router, then plug an ethernet cable from the router to your PC.. get it setup.. then turn on your PS3, and it will connect to the net via the Wi-Fi and your wireless router. Some people use Access points, or Bridges.. all you need is broadband at home on your PC with a $40 netgear wireless router and 4 port switch to use the PS3 wifi.

You can play against people from around the world. This is called Infrastructure Mode, and this can only be used with a wireless router that has your internet service provider cable plugged in. However, other PS3's and I think PSP's can link in a certain amount of distance. This is called Ad- Hoc Mode, and it can be used anytime with another PS3 or a PSP.
