My buddy who worked there for a while knew of a guy who rolled his car after hitting a gator. Is this a common thing?

Not really. Your buddy probably wanted to see what a gator was like squished. You can see them from quite a distance when they are crossing the roads in and around the 'glades'. You are supposed to give them the right-of-way. Some people; usually from out of state; have no patience and try to kill them.

Years ago here in Florida, they were a hazard in south Florida along alligator alley, before they put up the fences. Every now and then, you'll see a gator getting sun at the side of the road.

Sometimes they come up from canals and are spotted in the backyards, roads, etc. it's not a big hazard but it does happen. Next time, remind your buddy to keep his eyes on the road.....the gator could have been a kid.....

No. I live in Florida and I have never heard of anyone hitting an alligator ever.

Not common at all. Alligators aren't stupid and they rarely try and cross the road. They like to stay in the mud and water down in holes and canals and stuff.
