Menopause is the time in life when the body figures there is no more chance of a baby coming, so it stops the baby making cycle - i.e. slows production of hormones, stops ovulating and therefore stop the mentrual cycle. Largely it is the progesterone that is lacking most - which is vital to the bone cycle (estrogen fills in tiny bone cracks and progesterone then cleans it out some new estrogen can go in it's place for health bones) and other things. Wild Yam progesterone cream can be very helpful in combatting the negative symptoms of menopause - including hot flashes, bone loss, unwanted hair growth, etc. Here's the one I use: http://www.mynsp.com/carole/products/guide.aspx?stockNum=4936

Peace!

Menopause comes about as the supply of eggs in your ovaries dries up and the ovaries cease producing estrogen.

Periods become erratic and eventually cease. After you've gone for a year without any periods you're deemed to have reached menopause. That usually occurs around age 51 but can occur any time from 40 onwards.

The effects of the menopause vary dramatically from one woman to another. This is in part because the production of testosterone, though it dips around the time of menopause, normally rebounds and in the absence of any estrogen production takes on, if the woman is not on hrt, a dominant role.

That's why you find so many competent, "can-do" older women. High levels of unopposed testosterone also lead to the moustache and beard growth so common in older women.

First, a woman can't be "in menopause". A woman can be in perimenopause or can be post-menopausal, but menopause can only be recognized in retrospect, as in it's been a year since my last period, that must have been menopause.

Perimenopause means that your reproductive functions are slowing down, and it generally starts in your 30's. That's why it's more difficult to conceive in your 30's than in your 20's or teens. Perimenopause is a process that can take up to 20 years.

Personally, I'm at 3 months and counting. Then again, I've been at 3 months and counting a few time in the last couple of years. I keep trying to tell my ovaries that it's time for them to act their age and just stop already, but at least to date, they haven't been paying attention.
