Though I have no references to give you, I believe the South was able to sustain their war effort through the belief that might did not make right and further believed in their right to self government. Added to this, the South stood firmly behind their military leadership. Robert E. Lee was a superb commander as witnessed by the fact that the Union offered him the command of the Union Army prior to conflict ensuing. One must also take into consideration the historical culture of the South.

Hope that helps a little.

#1=Robert E. Lee (It was a war to shoot ourselves in the foot)

#2=think of what u want:

but i think that no matter (which) world race the enslaved were making America rich and this is still going on by throwing a little money at the slaves and the borders are open and the system is the same and the little bite of money makes it legal-we are still in a war to end the poverty it created for the division of the spoil there are more paid white slaves because of this wrong thinking than the freedom was providing for there not being anything better and still there is nothing better than cheap world out there

Fighting on their own land (knew it better), a greater desire to win (independence vs. the north's....blah), Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, taking initiative.

however, the north had better generals. i debate this with soooo many teachers including my social studies teachers but me and many civil war experts believe that the south had a coupla great generals and the rest were crap while the north had a ton of good

The most skilled generals defected to the South. And they were playing defense-and enjoyed all the logistical advantages of friendly ground, and has greater morale.

like in the revolutionary war, we were fighting on 'foreign' land. the south side. we were not trying to conquer the south, well we were, but we wanted them to surrender and join the north. we had to make them cry uncle. so the south new the land and the stratedgy to use in their own land. they also had the slaves working more, but more and more slaves were fleeing to the north and joining the north army,

They had Superior Generals, a cause they felt worth fighting for, it's also easier to defend than attack, home field advantage.
