I have the Emperor 400 on a 55 Gal tank.
It is very loud and doesn't push any water through. I've taken it apart and rinsed all the major components, does same thing.
What could be wrong?

Check the impeller. they go bad very quickly in marineland filters. The impeller is the thing under the intake tube in the filter that has a magnet on the end and a little propeller. The motor sits under the impeller and spins a magnet, which spins the impeller magnet in the filter. The causes a propeller action, which pulls, not sucks, the water through the filter. When the area around the impeller magnet or the magnet itself is dirty, it won't work and it sounds like something stuck in a garbage dispose-all. Clean around the impeller and the impeller itself. If that doesn't work, most petstores carry these. I had to replace the one in my Penguin 330 (smaller version of the Emperor 400). If you can't find the proper impeller, go to www.marineland.com. You should be able to order one from customer service. Take the impeller to the pet store to make sure you get the right one. If that doesn't work, ask marineland about a warrenty. Most marineland products have a 2 year warrenty, but I think you have to register the filter for it.

Good luck, it should be a cheap fix.

Has it ever worked? If it's old (or used), check the impeller as was already suggested. If it is new and you are following the directions, take it back to where you got it.

Also, are you putting water in the filter (at least to a level above the impeller) before plugging it in? If you are trying to run it dry, it won't create a suction to pull the water up the intake (this may seem obvious to some, but you don't say if you are experienced at fishkeeping). This usually makes a lot of noise, and will eventually burn out the motor.

they are loud when they are out of water. i put the impeller together wrong the first time i got one and took it back to the store as faulty and got a new one only to find out it did the same thing and the fault was me not putting it together right. the wheel is kind of loud the first couple of days but quiets down. sometimes i still hear it. it runs very quietly compared to others though.

Sounds faulty, if it is new take it back.
