what does it mean when a book is unabridged?

Some books are so long and advanced that they take out certain parts or change the vocabulary of the original version and publish it as an 'abridged' version for younger, less experienced readers. Unabridged just means nothing's taken out.

That means it is word for word what the author wrote.
you want unabridged, unless in some cases you can't understand it. edgar allen poe is hard for some unabridged.
