I have 2 regular computer speakers and a subwoofer -- for some reason the subwoofer has stopped working. It's been not working for about a year but keep forgetting to buy a new one
It's weird because i listen to music on my computer pretty much everyday without the subwoofer working but every now and then it will decide to make noise for about a minute and then, nothing!
Any one who can help me with this problem will be my saviour! lol

Try playing with the wiring leading to the subwoofer. Wiggle the wire portion that is right next to where it connects to the subwoofer and see if you hear it coming on, even for a brief period, or hear pops or clicks. if so, then you have bad wiring. Continue to check the entire length of the wiring. If you can position the wire to a specific spot and the sound comes on and stays on as long as you hold its position, you may be able to find the short and cut and splice the wire. A short could also be in the subwoofer itself, or the connector could be damaged. Good think computer speakers are fairly cheap. (I know thats reletive to your financial standing)

ok if the speaker seems to work intermittently this is normal.
especially if you have the bass or trebble set on low.
or if your systems speakers are set a stereo instead of 2.1 in your case.
find the control panel for your sondcard. now go through the speaker calibration program (built in on all good sound card software (not within the windows sound properties control panel)).
calibrate the speakers properly, you should hear a tone during the calibration program. if not then you may have to buy brand new speakers. don't panic. they are not very expensive 9depending on the quality you want) see www.dabs.com for speakers, if you find a set you want use www.froogle.co.uk or froogle.com to locate the cheapest other shopping comparison sites are available.
good luck.
remember that the speaker will only work at set frequencies in the audio file you are playing and this is normal on x.1 speaker systems. so no need to panic.
also as one other person said make sure the subwoofer has power either internal or external power (batteries, mains powered or USB powered) if no power then the speaker may not work at low volume levels and may struggle to work even when you turn the volume to maximum.

I have had this same problem before, it's can be a short circuit or something is loose in the wiring.

I don.t think its anything to do with your sound card or software, its probably bad wiring or connections within your 2.1
