These three ways of incorporating other writers' work into your own writing differ according to the closeness of your writing to the source writing.
* Quotations must be identical to the original, using a narrow segment of the source. They must match the source document word for word and must be attributed to the original author.
* Paraphrasing involves putting a passage from source material into your own words. A paraphrase must also be attributed to the original source. Paraphrased material is usually shorter than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it slightly.
* Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Once again, it is necessary to attribute summarized ideas to the original source. Summaries are significantly shorter than the original and take a broad overview of the source material.

A paraphrase is... your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form. one legitimate way (when accompanied by accurate documentation) to borrow from a source. a more detailed restatement than a summary, which focuses concisely on a single main idea. How to Summarize 1. A summary - or précis - is a shorter version of a longer piece of writing. The summary captures all the most important parts of the original, but expresses them in a [much] shorter space. Example Original text 'At a typical football match we are likely to see players committing deliberate fouls, often behind the referee's back. They might try to take a throw-in or a free kick from an incorrect but more advantageous positions in defiance of the clearly stated rules of the game. They sometimes challenge the rulings of the referee or linesmen in an offensive way which often deserves exemplary punishment or even sending off. No wonder spectators fight amongst themselves, damage stadiums, or take the law into their own hands by invading the pitch in the hope of affecting the outcome of the match.' [100 words] Summary Unsportsmanklike behaviour by footballers may cause hooliganism among spectators. [9 words]

Paraphrasing is rewording something, but retaining the same idea. Summarizing can involve paraphrasing, if you reduce complex text to it's basic ideas. Or, you could stick more with the original wording but pull out the key ideas only (which you may need to quote or cite, depending on the assignment).

paraphrasing you say what the other person said in a slightly different way so you don't have to use quote marks, but you do credit them. summarizing is cutting all the bullsh*it out and just writing the most important parts.

Paraphrasing is when you write something in your own words about something else so it wouldn't be plagiarizing. Summarizing is when you tell of all the key points about something. Hope I helped.
