Vince McMahon regards the WWE as a "sports entertainment" company rather than purely professional wrestling. What's the difference, you may ask? A good indicator is how the announcers are calling a match. Rather than calling it as an athletic contest in which both guys are trying to beat each other, the focus of the announcing will be on the "story" that is being told within the match or the feud. Also, the matches themselves are usually five minute or less affairs which involve basically the same moves by the wrestlers week after week so the casual fan can know what to expect when seeing a certain wrestler.

So why do marginally talented bodybuilders seem to get pushed over much better in-ring wrestlers? The first and best reason is that Vince likes the giant bodybuilder look; if you have it, you get pushed. If you don't, you need to be a wiz in the ring or have some unique ability that sets you apart. Vince wants people who will sell tickets and t-shirts. This quality is called charisma. John Cena has it. I would argue that Randy Orton and Dave Batista have it in limited quantities. I would also mention that selling tickets as a measure of how successful a wrestler is very subjective, because most of the names that are considered as "big draws" have been given such a marketing push, that you could say almost anyone with such treatment would sell tickets. Also, I find it unlikey that the guy who's in the main event is so responsible for who does and doesn't come to see the show - I believe the overall quality of the wrestling promotion at that particular time is a much better indicator of how many people will attend the shows.

As long as the McMahons believe that bodybuilders equal charisma and that stories are more important than wrestling matches, guys like Batista will be more positively portrayed in the WWE than guys like CM Punk.

CM Punk can defiantly be a top guy without the title. Besides talent a another big thing he has in his favor is the talent pool. Lets think about this for a second how many true main eventers are their right now. Cena, Punk, Orton, Sheamus,Ryback, Big show......maybe Del Rio? Bryan is a mid carder, Ziggler is up in the air, Triple H is part time, Rock's part time, Lesnars part time, Undertaker wrestles once a year. There just isn't a stacked roster right now. Another factor we have to consider is the fans. WWE can't put Punk in the background because face or heel he's too over. They were able to do that in 09 because even though he had his fans he wasn't huge. Last year he exploded on the scene. He set the wrestling world on fire with one promo. Since then he's been one of their top draws and merchandise seller. He's gotten to a level of popularity that even rivals Cenas. There's no way they can just drop. Now they should slow him down since he's been champion for a year and a half. They can't keep him in the spotlight for too long or the fans will turn on him. So no I don't think they'll stop pushing him He's just too over.

Well, you have a point, but your logic went off track when you dissed Brian Kendrick and Paul London (London does an excellent Shooting Star Press). They're both fantastic wrestlers, as is C.M. Punk.

It's unfair to use the argument that wrestlers like Punk don't get pushed because they don't have charisma, especially if you know nothing about their entire wrestling history. Punk is one of the most charismatic wrestlers I have ever seen (buy some Ring of Honor DVDs and you'll see what a treat it is to watch C.M. Punk). WWE doesn't allow them to show their charisma, because they would upstage guys like Cena and Triple H.

Vince McMahon has always had a thing about pushing big guys. He doesn't care about wrestling talent. Also, there is a lot of nepotism and favortism in the WWE. If you're related to the McMahons or friends with Triple H, you'll most likely get pushed.

Because alot of the more talnted technical wrestlers like Benoit and CM Punk arent as charismatic as guys like Batista or Cena. While Punk and Benoit do have alot of fans they never get the same reaction as Cena Batista Taker Orton etc. So wwe gives these guys more high profile matches. Also they bring in more money (watch any show and look at how many more people have cena or DX shirts compared to Benoit or Finlay

maybe because CM punk has the build and wrestling ability of 14 year old couch potato? Batista may not be the most talented wrestler, but I mean the guy has the look, thats really all that matters. on ability alone, shelton benjamin, kurt angle or bobby lashley, (all formerly real wrestlers) would be running the show

I would think that they produce their show to appeal to the casual wrestling fan who knows nothing. These people are more likely to be channel surfing and will stop to watch a match if they see some unnaturally big guy, whereas a great action packed match won't appeal to them.
