I don't know the password and for obvious reasons I can't call and get it from her. Can I do anything? My computer died and I really would like to use the one she left behind for school. Thanks

Be very careful. She probably left the computer behind, because she did not want to claim the contents on the hardrive. If she has clicked into child pornography, the computer would show and you could be charged. If you know the name of the internet company , you can call the company and tell them you forgot the password. If your ex roomate, did not give you the password then there is some reason, she left it with you, so no one else can gain access. I would not use it. Could be she has done something illegal. Big question mark ???

Assuming that the computer your ex-roommate left behind is a PC, simply go out and purchase an operating system and install it on that PC (e.g. Windows, LinuxOS, etc).

If you still have the OS install disks from your previous computer and you don't expect to have that machine ever running again, install the OS on the computer you have now.

Click on the link below and follow the directions. It is VERY easy to use. The only thing you need is a Windows XP installation CD.

if it's a normal PC (not a macintosh), do the following:

open the case (the pc itself) and look for a small round battery...remove it, and then re-boot the pc. This will remove the password prompt window, and you could log into windows with no trouble at all

get an OS CD, boot to it, reformat hard drive, reinstall OS & applications, use machine

if you do not have a windows OS CD, you can try one of the live Linux CDs for free. i have not tried any of these yet, but here is a list: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
make sure you get one that supports your CPU.

Install the OS from scratch, either Mac OS X, Windows or Linux - you don't say which it is.
