"Neocon" means neoconservative.

Neoconservatism is a political movement in the U.S. which began in the 1960's.

There are three basic pillars of Neoconservatism:
1. Economics: Cutting tax rates in order to stimulate steady, wide-spread economic growth and acceptance of the necessity of the risks inherent in that growth, such as budget deficits, as well as the potential benefits, such as budget surpluses.
2. Domestic Affairs: Preferring strong government but not intrusive government, slight acceptance of the welfare state, adherence to social conservatism, and disapproval of counterculture.
3. Foreign Policy: Patriotism is a necessity, world government is a terrible idea, the ability to distinguish friend from foe, protecting national interest both at home and abroad, and the necessity of a strong military.

Currrently, neo-conservatism is a term almost exclusively used by the enemies of America's liberation of Iraq. There is no "neoconservative" movement in the U.S. at this time; the word is used as a pejoritive by the political left to stereotype supporters of U.S. foreign policy under the George W. Bush administration.
You'll probably see that demonstrated in any number of the answers to your question, along with a variety of conspiracy theories and questionable references.

That's the only context in which you'll hear "neocon" in the media these days.

1st, the more I learn; the more I understand that I know nothing. Having said this it is my humble belief that:

The NeoCons derive their ideology from from a deceased university of Chicago proffesor named Leo Strauss. The interesting thing that I recently heard about him is that his mentor was a man named Smidt(spelling?). Smidt was the formost legal advisor for the Nazis and was a great supporter of all their major ideological points.

If the Nazi connection is true then:

The tactics of the Bush administration, (especially the illegal surveilance) the ideological history of Strauss, and the fact that George W. Bush's grandfather Prescot Bush was a major financier of the Nazi war machine (through the steel manufacturer Thysen) all add up to some scary stuff indeed.

For more information on what the neocon's ideology is, look up Shadia Drury (a proffessor in Canada) who has analyzed Leo Strauss's work.

You can read how they define themselves at . I quote: "A neoconservative organization supporting greater American militarization, challenging hostile governments, advancing democratic and economic freedom, ..." The current US administration considers itself neocon.

They were hoping for something like the WTC attack to happen. You can read about it on that site - they talk about "a new Pearl Harbour" because Pearl Harbour was what allowed the administration during WWII to involve the US in the world war by making ordinary Americans really mad. Of course, this has made a lot of left wing people suspicious of the neocon links to al-Qaeda, Saddam Hussein etc.

So, they other answerer who says it's a "liberal" term is VERY wrong.

It means Neoconservative. Basically it's the fanatical Republicans who would support someone (a president for example), even if the mistakes he's made are so obvious and devastating that everyone ELSE can see the guy is a joke. They like to think everyone opposed to the government's ideas is a liberal, which of course isn't true. Neocons tend to live in denial, and pretend that the government can do no wrong, especially when the government is Republican. I purposely left out our present president's name because Neoconservatives have been CALLED Neoconservatives since the 60's.
