I live in an ok area, there are a few gangs, but as long as you dont do anything stupid, your ok, and many of the gang members are very good people.

Funny how there are no shootings for months, then 3 people in one day, and the next day another. Then after that, nothing for a while.

LOL...okay number one thing I learned growing up around gangs. In my experience they're generally not 'good people'.

Answering your question, the reason that the nicest areas are targeted is because of the fact that they're nice. And nice areas means nice things. I mean if you were a burglar/robber, would you want to go hit up the crack houses and run down areas? You're gonna go for the big payout. Check out a show called 'To Catch a Thief'. They show you just how easy it is to rip off yuppies who feel real secure in their 'safe neighborhood'.

I know there are other areas besides robbery such as murder, rapes, and other acts of violence. The biggest issue here is what I stated above. These individuals are lulled into a feeling of security and they let their guard down. This in turn makes things so much easier. Also, in these nicer areas there is more cash involved. This causes marital discourse, cheating and many other issues; which takes us back to the list above. It's a vicious cycle, and one that shouldn't be taken in stride. Some of the nicer areas are sometimes more scarier than the not-so-nice ones. ;)

It's like a pressure cooker. It's bound to explode when left unattended.

I've found that most cities have great neighborhoods that are not far from those that you shouldn't visit unarmed.
