When he gets accepted to a college, the admissions package will have info on how to apply to live in a dorm.

Don't worry about it now. Wait until he gets accepted somewhere. They'll send him the info on it then.

I just went through this whole process, I am a senior in high school.

What you should do, is not worry about it until his senior year really. Once he knows where he wants to go to college, go visit the school and take a look at the dorms, see if he likes them. Once you have made a decision about the dorms (and the education he wants, dorms should be LAST on the list of reasons to go to a school. But you asked specifically about dorms), go apply to the school.

On the application, it will ask you whether you want to live in the dorms or commute. Of course, select the dorms. That's all you really need to know when it comes to dorms.

I went to a local college and my parents forced me to live in a dorm the first year because they too wanted me to have the experience. You should def. ask him what he wants to do, it is his life and is going to be his experience. I ended up moving home after the first semester. But then again college dorms might be a better place for a guy.

I stayed in a dorm my freshman year. I really didn't like it. I currently live in an apartment close to campus, but I do suggest that your son at least try the dorm life. Some like it. It's also great if you don't have transportation and everything is close like food, library, and classes.

Ask him what college he wants to apply for and see if it has dorms, if it does, you should contact the school to see the steps that are needed to be taken inorder to live in the dorms.
If they do not offer dorms to freshman (what he will be) then you are out of luck and he will have to live at home.

College applications start next fall. Most are due jan 1st, some dec 1st, between now and then all you can do is get stuff ready to put on the application. Its a little late to change course schedule, but you need to take prep tests like SAT's. Also you need to start requesting info from potential schools. Research research research! www.collegeboard.com see where he fits in each schools demographics. Write or call finalist schools for comprehensive brochures, and for visiting info. Also if the application needs a little work, practice writing essays, and find an area he's interested in to pursue independent studies and volunteer in.
