Let f(x)=.003 - (1.246x + .37)

Calulate the following rate of change:

1) f(2) - f(1) / 2-1
2) f(1) - f(2) / 1-2
3) f(3) - f(4) / 3-4

I forgot, there was i more problem.

now it says
Rewrite f(x) in the form f(x)= b + mx

So would that be f(x)= -1.246 + .373?

First I assume you mean:
[ f(2) - f(1) ] / ( 2 - 1 )

This is simple substitution. Just put the given value in for x everywhere in the function:

PROBLEM 1:

Start with f(2) = .003 - (1.246(2) + .37)
f(2) = .003 - (2.492 + .370)
f(2) = .003 - (2.862)
f(2) = -2.859

Now figure f(1) = .003 - (1.246(1) + .37)
f(1) = .003 - (1.246 + .370)
f(1) = .003 - (1.616)
f(1) = -1.613

Now put this together:
[ f(2) - f(1) ] / (2 - 1)

This is (-2.859 - (-1.613)) / 1
= -1.246 / 1
= -1.246

PROBLEM 2:

(-1.613 - (-2.859) ) / (1 - 2)
= 1.246 / -1
= -1.246

Note: this is the same answer as #1.

PROBLEM 3:

You try this on your own now... here's some hints to get you started:

f(3) = .003 - (1.246(3) + .37)
f(4) = .003 - (1.246(3) + .37)
(3-4) = -1

First, to save time on calcualtions, simplify f(x):

f(x)=.003 - (1.246x + .37)
f(x)=.003 - 1.246x - .37
f(x)= -1.246x - 0.367

To find f(2), plug in 2 for x:

f(2) = -1.246*2 - 0.367 = -2.859

Similarly, plug in "1" for x to find f(1). Then use these to find (f(2)-f(1)) / (2-1). You can probably save even more time by noticing that the -0.367 terms are going to cancel out anyway, as f(a) - f(b) = (-1.246a - 0.367) - (-1.246b - 0.367) = 1.246(b-a). Then plug in your a and b values to get the numerator of each expression.

The other two problems follow the same idea.

A) 4/(x^2-5x) - a million/(x^2-25) = 0 the Least consumer-friendly Denominator is x(x-5)(x+5). once you mult the two facets by using the liquid crystal reveal you get 4x + 20 -x = 0; then x = -20/3. [BTW, some needless to say invalid strategies may well be 0, and ±5 for the reason that could mean branch by using 0, which isn't authorized. B) a million - (7/x) + (10/x^2) = 0 in this equation the liquid crystal reveal is x². After mult the two facets by using liquid crystal reveal you get x² - 7x +10 = 0 The left area components! (or you're able to desire to apply the quadratic formula on the topic.) (x-2)(x-5) = 0 implies x=2 or x=5.

Yes, if f(x) is your function, f(2) is that function when x is replaced by two:

f(x) = .003 - (1.246x + .37)
f(2) = .003 - [(1.246)(2) + 37]

The rest is just simple arithmetic.
