Cherry barbs. Peaceful and nonschooling so can be combined with other fish, and like dense plants. Nice color and easy to care for.

Sparkling gouramis. Keep in a 2 or 3 to 1 female to male ratio to prevent harassment. Also like dense plants. Tiny but very pretty.

Killifish. Higher maintenance because they need live food. Can be aggressive. Gorgeous colors!

Dwarf puffer. Need to keep 2 females and a male to prevent harassment. Live & frozen foods are best. Need to be fed snails once a week or so to prevent overgrowth of beak, and can't be kept with other fish except other puffers.

Dwarf frogs. Need a secure tank cover and sinking food. (Don't get clawed frogs, which should be kept in groups and get too big for that in a 10gal.)

I have a ten gallon with a pictus catfish, red-tailed chark, leopard danio and dwarf gourami. That combination seemed to work for me--they hardly ever fight and they're all great fish to watch.

Other good fish are German Ram cichlids, rasboras, some of the hardier tetras (not neons or cardinals), small angelfish, and white clouds.

They're all great fish.

I recommend upside down catfish, they are really interesting. They will really appreciate having the shelter.

I would also recommend dwarf frogs, they are awesome, entertaining, and can even sing.

Barbs are also a good choice. Dwarf puffers are good, but their really vicious little things, you might not want to put many other fish in with them.

put in more plants and a bunch of female bettas and some largish ghost shrimp. nobody ever puts female bettas in a tank and they usually work well together. they are dirt cheap and come in as many different colors and patterns as the males. they also do well in small spaces but they are territorial and will want to have their own territory in the tank.

Well way to make this complicated..... If it has a tight lid you could try a few dwarf frogs or dwarf gouramis or a dwarf puffer
