Ever since I discovered my wireless network was being pirated, I've been searching high and low for a way to make the network secure.
I have tried making the access restricted to only the MAC numbers on my roommate's and my computers. However, when my computer can log on, hers won't..and vice versa.
I've tried setting up a password using the router's ftp--didn't get a password prompt. Tried turning off the SSID, but then my comp wouldn't recognize the network.
Can someone please help? And please dumb it down as much as possible because I'm not a tech-head when it comes to computers.
PS My router is a Netgear.

Yikes. You have already tried the things I would have tried. There is a articles from PC World Magazine which might help you.

Are you using WPA or WEP security? WPA is more secure, but some older wireless adapters only support WEP. MAC restrictions shouldn't prevent both of you being on at the same time.

You could set their lawn on fire, but lets go with a more legal solution :) Depending on which router you are using, connect to the router configuration website (for example, D-Link is 192.168.1.1) The router configuration site is most of the time listed on the bottom of the router, or in the manual it came with. Once you are on the site, look for a Tab along the lines of router configuration, password configuration, Key setup, or anything like that, depending on the site. You can set up many kinds of security passwords, the easiest and most basic format is WEP, which I recommend. Enter your 10,12,15,or 24 digit passcode (depending on the site), or select a pregenerated one, and write it down! Congragulations, your router is now password protected, meaning nobody can get onto your wifi without the password. Connect with your wifi device and enter the password. If you are running a laptop, it should save the password automatically so you do not have to keep re-entering it to connnect. A password is very beneficial on wireless, it prevents people on your wifi signal, so you won't be slowed down. It prevents people from accessing any personal or shared data you may have available over wifi. Hope this helps, good luck! Wish I could help more, but without the brand of the router I can only give generalized instructions... Nik J =D

Put a pass word, a lot of people can do this. I think you can access this from the control panel.

A baseball bat introduced to his wi-fi card will stop this (for a while, until he replaces it ) but, only after sufficient harsh language.
