I keep my rabbit's litter box in their cage and clean it at least 2x a day. I use feline pine litter in their box. I reccomend that or a similar wood pelleted litter. Check for wood pelleted horse stall bedding in a feed stall.
Never use clay cat litter. It can be deadly.
I'm not sure what kind of pet your mom has in mind that wouldn't have a smell. Rabbits are very clean animals.
Also, make sure to have your rabbit spayed/neutered to cut down on spraying and hormonal territorial marking.

No matter what the only way to really keep the smell is cleaning out the box. Not so much EVERY day, but maybe every other or every 3 days.
When looking for a litter, you want to remember rabbits will try and eat everything so you don't want to get a regular kitty litter because they may eat it and get sick from the chemiscals in it. A safe type to use is a old newspaper, or they actually make certain organic litters and certain litters made from newsprint and cardboard. This is safe for them to eat, and won't harm them if they swallow it.

As for where to put the litter box, Put it in a well ventilated area. This way the small won't just sit there, the air witll move and keep the small from building up.

Hope that helps!

For certain good litters try these:

No matter what kind of litter you use if you clean the box out every day it will not smell. They will use the bathroom in the same corner of the box and it doesn't take much time at all to clean it. Will the rabbit be staying in your bedroom, if so then that solves the problem.

clean it up every day and youll never have to worry.
im a little less consistent on cleaning so i ended up putting the cage out in the living room..cuz i didnt like smelling what i didnt clean.
if your mom doesnt want the rabbit around her then its ok to have in your room but take it from me: if you let it go too long (a week is definitely too long) then its not healthy for you or the rabbit. it can make you sick. you seem like a responsible person so you probly wouldnt have that problem. but to be on the safe side make sure youre consistent
like i said i have the litterbox under the cage.
i dont think it REALLY matters what you use for air freshener...since i think most of those air fresheners arent poisonous to the rabbit. but the best thing to use is Febreze..and thats even good for accidents the rabbits have. if they have an accident anywhere..then wipe it up right away and use Febreze. its almost like it was never there if you do that
