All the fines should be placed in the center and whoever lands on Lottery ie Free Parking should get it? We have played it that way for years and it is really fun. Mmm

It has always been an unofficial option. Some rather droll people prefer to play by the straight rules...but they don't take into account that we do have lottery these days. My mom taught me to play it the way you do. I have always enjoyed spending all that quality time getting upset when I lose, or excited when I win...but learning to handle both well, so that as an adult, I don't have temper tantrums when things don't go my way. One of the other people answered that it's all about bankrupting your opponents...but the game is called Monopoly...this means the object is to own everything, not bankrupt everyone. When everyone in your family is broke, it's no fun...but if you own everything, your family members can pay you rent...lol. Eventually, you buy them out of the game, and own even more. The Free Parking Lottery program offers a chance for people to have a chance to actually turn the tables.

Everyone seems to play with the option of putting money on free parking. Then most people also complain that Monopoly takes forever to play. I wonder why? lol

It is a fun variable to the game but it can really make the game drag on. Since the object of the game is to bankrupt your opponents, the more money that gets circulated, the longer it will take for players to run out of money. For that reason, I don't think it should ever be an official rule to the game.

Free Parking should be just that -== free parking

the main strategy of monopoly, besides getting monopolies, is money management. Mortgaging properties so you can build houses, then unmortgaging that property and mortgaging another, etc

When people put taxes on free parking, it makes the game like a lottery, instead of a game of skill ... and some people add $500 to the middle on top of the taxes every time it is hit

Horrible way to play the game imo

Just make diffrent versions of rules for play.Free parking can be the cash cow,or you are fined for rolling doubles on it(from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm!)
Make your own deck, and treat free parking as a drawing square(make the cards all hella good,or hella bad!) or just make it a free parking square, like the game wants you to.
Or you can change the whole game!
options:
Pick 4 colors, you can only buy from those colors.
Each token has a specal ability.
You must go around 3 times to buy the blue properties.
and so on and so fourth.

Absolutely not, and for reasons that previous answerers have cited. The game is long enough when you play by the official rules.

No. It puts more money into the "economy" of the game, and drastically increases the amount of time the game lasts. If you like playing for days on end, go ahead, but it should never be made official.
