Japan is an exceedingly safe country, in most respects. However, lone female travallers do encounter some problems, sadly.

That said, I recommend Kyoto. It is the cultural capital of Japan and has tons and tons of temples. It is about one hour north of Osaka, so you could easily combine the two.

Tokyo is over-rated in my opinion. Yes, it's modern and all that, but I think Kyoto is much nicer. But if you do visit Tokyo, be sure to visit Kamakura (about an hour southwest of Tokyo).

Hope this helps!

Never been to Osaka but I have heard many good things about it. Like how they have much better food than tokyo. There is a universal studios there too. In Tokyo, if you like sushi, I would recommend going to Tsukiji. I have ate sushi there countless times and it is very good. Especially, the ootoro (fatty tuna). They have a fish market area over there and there is plenty of really fresh sushi there. They also have some auctions for tuna there in the morning although I have never been to one.

Hi,

Personally, I loved Hokkaido (the northern island) as well. There are awesome winter festivals there at this time of year.

I think someone already mentioned certain customs and cultural expectations. I found that being polite and friendly to all I met worked well for me. Also, expect to be stared at a lot, (if you're not of Asian descent), you might feel a bit overwhelmed by all the people and the attention.

Also, don't be afraid to try new things. I got to experience a lot of cool things by being open-minded.

Hope this helps!

you say that you are moving over "soon" but you don't know where. How much of the Japanese culture and language do you know already?
By language I mean communication skills - reading and speaking
And by customs I don't mean 'kimono and chopsticks'. You must be careful about so many things in Japan to avoid the 'yappari gaijin da ne ' monku that you probably would understand anyway.
There are so many things that they will notice and judge you for, like if you leave a grain of rice in your bowl, to which way you point your shoes in the genkan, there are lots of things to learn.
um... good luck.

Yes, watch out for Samurai. The Emperor is determined to modernize his country and is mad for anything Western. But the Samurai believe he is being manipulated by his Cabinet ministers, and are fighting to retain the old ways.
