Anyone with an American Passport or ID is American. If they say they're anything else you have the right to punch them in the face.

Yes I am an American but I have Irish/Norwegian heritage. I think it's the desire to know 'where you come from'. We have researched our family and learned our ancestory. It's very interesting and fun to learn of those who came before us. I am proud to be an American. I am, also, proud of my past family that came from Ireland and Norway. I really don't see anything wrong with that.

I am Russian American.
My grandparents immigrated to America and I am second generation Russian American.

What Americans say is that their ancestors came from (wherever) but they are Americans.
African Americans had ancestors who were dragged here from Africa but they are Americans.

We're not saying we are not from America or that we are not proud to be Americans I think Most if not, All are very happy to call themselves Americans but most prefer to show that they were not originally from America. I think the only ones who can say they didn't come here one way or the other are the native Americans. See they are native to America and have not been dragged here or have immigrated here. Bye bye!

American Americans are otherwise (erroneously) called American Indians. Everyone else is either immigrants or descended from immigrants.

Why say you are Italian, etc., when you are American? Maybe you want to indicate that you are proud of your heritage!

Yes but people still like to have their culture protected so that even though they moved they will still hold those cultural values close to them.
