Change both to improper fractions
5 1/3 = (5 X 3 + 1)/ 3 = (16/3)
4 2/3= (4 x 3 + 2)/ 3 = (14/3)

Now you can add them:
(16 + 14) / 3 = 30/ 3 = 10

*Subtracting them is the same, but change the + to a - (16-14)/3 = 2/3

You can also multiply them:
(16 x 14)/ (3 x 3) = (224) / (9)

Now, to divide 9 into 224
...____
9 l 224

9 doesn't go into 2 but it does go into 22. (2 times)
...__2_
9 l 224
....-180
.......44

9 goes into 44, 4 times:
.._24
9l224
...-180
.....44
.....-36

There is 8 left over, so your final answer would be:

24 8/9

*Dividing is sort of the same. Instead, however, you multiply by the RECIPROCAL of the denomenator(the fraction on the bottom). The reciprocal is the fraction "flipped". So, if it is x/y, the reciprocal is y/x. So:

(16/3) / (14/3) = (16/3) x (3/14)

Now multiply across:

(16 x 3) / (14 x 3)

Since you have a x3 on the top and bottom, it cancels out. So you're left with:

16/14= 8/7 = 1 1/7

that's too ambiguous.

5 x 1/3 x 4 x 2/3 ?

5 (1/3) x 4 (2/3) ?

what's the actual question?

I'm not sure what you want to do with these numbers.

If you want to add them, the answer is 10.

If you want to subtract them, the answer is 2/3.

If you want to multiply them it would be 16/3 x 14/3 = 24 8/9.

If you are trying to divide them it would be 16/3 x 3/14 = 1 1/7.
