You can save a lot of money on your heating bill by turning down the heat when you are in bed or when you are away. Turning off the heat is not a good idea, because the furnace has to run way too much to heat up a cold house. If you normally like your thermostat set at 70, turn it down to 60 when you go to bed and back up to 70 when you get up and turn it down to 60 right before you leave and back up to 70 when you get back home. Doing these 2 things will save you 25 to 30 percent per month.

It is definitely cheaper for sure to just turn your heat down about 3-5 degrees when you leave or go to bed. (Always healthier to sleep in a little cooler temps). Turn it back up when you return or wake up in the morning. The energy used to go back up 3-5 degrees is quite a bit less than if it was totally off. Probably about 1 hour to return to your "comfort" temps compared to 2-3 hours if it was totally off.
This same scenario also applies to air conditioning within your home in the summers as well. You turn your thermostat up (warmer) by a few degrees when you leave your home. The house will still feel sort of cool when you return, so it will cool down in a shorter time than if you totally turned your A/C off completely. Besides, this summer scenario is even worse when you come home to the heat, if you completely turned your A/C off. Not a nice feeling to leave the hot outdoors to arrive in a clammy indoors for a couple of hours, till it cools down again!
This is what we have done for the past 5 years, which seems to really work. My husband is very money conscious, and this system works for him, lol.
Hope this helps.
