The United States gained possession of the Philippines after the Spanish-American War in 1898 the Philippine-American War in 1899. what year it was "formed" hope you didn't mean the islands cause i wouldn't know.
it was in fact discovered in 1521 by Fedinand Magellan.
Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao.
