i'm planning on buying a ryukin goldfish. But i'm not sure what size tank/bowl i should buy for it. Also i would like to know how often i would need to clean the bowl/change the water. Also would i have to get a pump (one of thoses things that pump air into the tank), i'm going to keep it in my room, and that would be too noisy, are there any alternatives? Thanks

For a fancy, you can have a minimum of 10 gallons of water per fish. The rule for goldies is: 10 gallons of water per fish up to 3 inches, 15 gallons of water up to 4 inches of fish and 20 gallons of water for each fish five inches or more. Now, goldies really like having a friend, and they do grow, so I would suggest at least a 20 gallon and get a friend and be prepared that you may need to get a bigger tank a few years down the road. You do not need a heater, but you MUST have an aeration system. The rule for that is you need 10X the tank size. So, if you had a 20 gallon tank, you would need at least a 200 gph pump. You do a 25% water change every week and siphon the poop and leftover food out of the substrate. You feed them on the average of once a day, no more than twice, but can feed them every other day with no harm. Less is better than more. Soak all food first, even flakes, so that they don't get air in their tummies. Here is a link to a great goldfish site.

Nothing smaller then a 20 gallon long tank, it will also need a good filter. Do partial water changes (around 20%) once a week with a gravel vac. Most fish do enjoy playing in the bubbles from the air pump but as long as your filter is disrupting the surface of the water enough then no you don't need one.

For information on how to properly care for goldfish check out this site, http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/ And make sure you cycle your tank you can find out about that on that site too.

No bowl is not made for goldfish. one Goldfish need atleast 10 gal of water. So, it depends on you, if you are going to keep 2 goldfish then bring 20 gal tank. and air pump is also very necessary for them. there are also air pump available in market which doesn't makes too much noise.

I have owned fish for over 10yrs. Gold Fish are very hardy fish, yet get very big. A bowl would dirty up fast. You are better off getting a 20 gallon or bigger for your fish. If you want to start small for now and don't mind changing later, I wouldn't go small than a 10 gallon. The fish will require a filter. They are poopers for sure. They will eat anything. They have what is called an undergravel filter. They are pretty quiet. Yet I think worse to clean later on. I prefer to use above filter. Easier to get to and clean. Another thing to think of as I have mentioned about other gold-fish. They like to suck off the bottom and clean the food off the gravel. Make sure your gravel is bigger than its mouth. I had 2 black Moors constantly get small gravel stuck in their mouth and I had to remove it. Another thing to think of as well as they like to gulp air. So when you put a pinch of flake in the tank, try to put your fingers farther down in the tank and spread it around. Otherwise they could get Swimmers Bladder from gulping air in while feeding on floating flakes. Good Luck!

Goldfish get very big, this one will get to be about 8-10 inches fully grown. While goldfish are often kept in bowls this is not an acceptable habitat for them. An adult ryukin requires at least 20 gallons and then you could probably only have one. If you're looking for a very quiet air pump look for the tetra brand, I have one and its very quiet since it has rubber feet on it.
