what do consumers really really want and MUST have? Besides gas, cures for disease etc. What will you guys absolutely pay hard earned money for? im trying to develop an idea for a business/product.

Narrow down your audience. "All consumers" is too broad a target to effectively reach. Consider starting with a very specific, very accessible group of people. Ideally it will be a group of people you know very well- a group you are involved with, for example. If you are on discussion groups for some hobby you enjoy that might be a good place to start.
It seems like you want to be able to target "everyone everywhere" but any marketing expert will tell you that's impossible. Effective advertising and marketing focuses on a certain segment of society so that they can gear their advertising to that group of people.

You're having trouble figuring that out? Go to the nearest store and look around at what is on the shelves. THAT is what people pay hard earned money for, or else it would not be on the shelf.
