The current Reds only date to 1882 and have no direct link to the 1860s Red Stockings, who disbanded in 1871.

The oldest existing franchise is the Atlanta Braves, who started their existence in the National Association as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871. They actually have a bit of a link with the 1860s Cincinnati team, as Harry Wright was hired by Boston when the Cincinnati team disbanded and brought several teammates with him.

The oldest team that still plays in its original city is the Chicago Cubs, who also began in 1871 but didn't play in '72 and '73 because their park and all their equipment was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire, and thus have only played continuously since 1874.

I've visited all the links on this page and most of them point to the Reds. I also did a little research and most of the credible stuff I've looked at points to the Reds. Most of the people on the page are just BSin though cuz there is a whole bunch of it about the Reds goin undefeated cuz they only played good amateur teams. It wasn't that simple back then. They were a club and began paying players to come play for them. It was mostly for fun until they started paying players. After that the other teams started paying players. Thats why teams like Boston and NY "started" right after the Reds and I don't care what anybody says every website I've been to, including the Cubs' says that they didn't become a pro club until after 1900

Hope this clears a lot up cuz it did for me.

Well, it would all depend on what link you followed and what you consider an actual continued franchise. The Red Stockings were considered the first team to publically pay players, but then the franchise ended for a couple years because of money problems and then the Reds were later formed out of the banrupt franchise. But, if you follow the link below, which is the offical MLB history, then they declare the Braves to be the oldest franchise forming in 1871. Site listed below.

You're correct.

The Cincinnati reds (originally the Red Stockings) were the first professional baseball team. And in that year, 1860, they played only good amateur teams and went undefeated.

Looking at the link above, it turns out it's the Atlanta Braves (1871). That being said, it's also interesting to note that the oldest of the modern NFL teams is the 100+ year old team known then as Morgan Athletic Club. They're now called the Arizona Cardinals.
