Excluding blood transfusions there is no advantage. All blood types function the same and with the same efficiency.

However:
Including blood transfusions it is to your best advantage to be AB. People with AB can accept blood from any blood type.

If your blood type is AO then you can accept blood from only A (commonly just called A) and O types. If your blood type is BO (commonly just called B) then you can accept blood from only B and O types. If you are OO (commonly just called O) you are at the largest disadvantage because you can only accept blood from other people with OO type blood.

As for the blood type positive/negative it is better to be positive then negative. Positive can receive blood from positive and negative versions of acceptable blood (example: AO+ can get blood from other AO+, AO-, OO+ and OO-). Negative blood types can only get negative blood from acceptable blood types (example: AO- can get blood from AO- or OO-)

The only advantage to OO- is if you like donating your blood because OO- is referred to as the "universal donor" because it can be accepted by all blood types.

Having type AB positive blood makes a person a universal recipient, meaning that the person shouldn't have a bad reaction to any blood type in a transfusion. So the AB pos. person has a better chance of having blood available for a transfusion because any kind will be OK.

Having type O negative blood makes a person a universal donor, meaning that the person can give blood to anyone. So the type O neg. person would be able to help many different people.

Yes, there are.

Type AB is the universal recipient and the most advantageous because it can get a blood transfusion from any blood type. Type O is the universal donor, and is the most disadvantageous (to its owner) because it can only get a blood transfusion from another Type O.
