perfectly legal too, the only time it becomes illegal is if YOU share them with others via p2p so just disable the sharing folder when you setup, the people you are getting the files from are the ones breaking copyright laws not you

iTunes is the most popular, mainly because iPods are the most popular MP3 player.

You can download off iTunes for other players, but will need to get rid of the DRM and convert them to MP3. There are programs available which will do this, or you can burn and audio CD and re-import it as MP3 files.
