Ash...I know what you mean about strikers needing speed. Look at Ronaldo. My son likes to tell people that he is a striker (He's a LW), but he runs like he is stuck in mud.

Anyone heard of a striker named Rossi? Apparently he is eligible to play for either the US or Italy in 2010.

Thanks Chloro, good assessment...I have briefly heard of the kid from the Red Bulls, but didn't know his name. I will look him up...If he comes to Columbus I'll go check him out.

Clint Dempsey no doubt is one of the best right now. DaMarcus Beasley is good too..Donovan sucks, i never understood why everyone made a big deal about him. I think Rossi has his mind set on Italy he doesn't seem to interested in playing for the U.S. Apparently he was called up to the world cup training camp but he turned it down because he wants to play for Italy.

Thank you so much for you "Additional details" to this question. I almost explode when people say Landon Donovan is the best American talent. It is a disgrace that he or Freddy Adu is the face of American soccer. Donovan in the World Cup was straight embarassing. Adu is simply overrated.

I was fortunate to go to England and see McBride play live and he was amazing. I think he is one of the best Americans, but he's getting old.

On the topic of old, Claudio Reyna is probably the most accomplished American player. He paved the way for many of the non-goalkeeping American soccer players to play in Europe. I don't know of any other American that actually held the captain band for a Premership team, so I must recognize him.

But on the topic of the current best, I must go with a few. First, being a NYRB fan, everyone here must look at the "real Adu" : Jozy Alteriore. You might not know of him now, but I honestly think he is the future for Americans every winning the World Cup. Plus he's ony 16 or 17 years old.

Second, I must go with Clint Dempsey. He is the only American player with balls enough to try creative moves and tactful passing schemes.

Just no one say Donovan or Adu.

McBride is a little past his prime. He probably shouldnt be selected for the NT again as the next WC he will be pretty old and for a striker speed is pretty much everything. Thats why you see the strikers usually slowing down after 29ish while attacking mid's(like Zidane) still play well until 34ish. Kinda like the QB versus WR.. QBs usually need more experience(reading the game) to start hitting their peak while WR's must be lightning quick. Speed usually deteriotes around 29ish in most people.
Id say Dempsey.

Its Dempsey and McBride. McBride still consistent goal scorer in EPL, Dempsey soon to be starting for Fulham as well.

UPdate:The question wasn't about McBride joining the national team, it was right now. Right now he is the leading scorer on an EPL team, something no other American can say.
