I find this quite freaky as it reminds me of Roald Dahl's "The Witches". And I know this occurs as I have seen it with my own eyes.

Some Jews, mostly very conservative, believe that we should not be uncovered before God and his power. Men where yarmulkes or hats and some women will wear hats or scarves. Others are covered with their wigs and prefer to do it that way. I don't think they cut off all their hair, but I could be wrong. I know that back in the day, girls who entered the convent used to chop their hair off in an effort to not look pretty anymore and because it was a lot more comfortable under the veil. Geeze! I can't believe these answers! Only the person above me got it somewhat right, though conservative Jews believe that we should cover our heads at all times before God, not just when in the temple. Maybe the experts are all working.

There is only one group of Orthodox Jewish women that do this, that I know of. They live in Jerusalem. They have alot of strange habits. But, most of us Jews are pretty sensible. Then, all religious have their strange groups.

Married Orthodox Women usually wear a wig over their hair, a hat, a scarf, or what is called a snood (like a stocking cap over their longer hair). It is a matter of modesty. Once married, only the husband and the family can see the woman's hair as it is considered a sensuous sight, and not to be shown to other men.

This is no different than the hijab worn by Muslim women. Many Christian women cover their hair, too-for the sake of modesty.

I belive that Jewish women are not supposed to show their hair as its the essence of their beauty or something. Instead of just wearing a headscarf though like Muslims do, vanity makes them feel that they must have a hairstyle and wearing a wig is how they can hve beauty and faith together

So other men will not find them attractive, and they will be less tempted to commit adultery.

On the other hand, I found Sinead O'Connor quite a turn on when she had cropped hair.
