I have 4 kids ages 1, 3, 5 and 6. I am a newly single Mom, and so am getting on my feet again......My gas bill was due on Tuesday, well this morning I woke up and had NO GAS!

The heaters in my house are Gas only!! I emailed and phoned, and was told the same thing "Shoulda paid your bill on the day it was due!" Well I couldn't pay it until this morning....but now they want all sorts of "reconnection charges" and I only have enough $$$ for the original bill!!! They won't reconnect it without getting the reconnect charge. Also won't make payment arrangements with me cause I have no history with this Company.

We've just had a horrible 2 day Ice storm and it's 25 degrees outside, with the weather not due to warm up anytime soon.

HELP!!! Can I do ANYTHING to them?!?!
I have nowhere else to go with my kids and keeping them bundled up isn't helping!

FORGOT TO ADD: No I did NOT get many notices. I got ONE letter giving me the due date, that date came and off went the Gas. But it's funny when people think THEY know what's goin on.

Try contacting a local church, even if you don't go there.

No one is required to do business with you. I agree it's fairly unreasonable, though. Try contacting the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor's office, etc. Or, call the media. I'll bet they change their story pretty fast then. You might also ask to speak to a superior, rather than dealing with the underlings who have no authority.

Did you receive any notices? They usually send at least two. Some let you make arrangements, or give you extensions.Your whole situation is sad, but as we all know we live in a world where bill collectors, etc. do not care about anyone's situation. They only want their money. You get they're service, they want their money. I have seen them cut power off in a house where a man was on an oxygen machine. Ruthless.

If you didn't receive at least 1 notice, I would contact a city official. Try seeking help from Human resources.

I would not want to be the guy that shut the gas off, and killed another human being. That would be tough to live with. . Maybe in youth you can justify such an action by saying. Hey it was my job. If not me someone else would have done it. But when you reach that age , and are elderly yourself. And feel cold, and you think back , and have lots of time to think back. Because all the distractions of youth and middle age are gone. And you set and relive your life, then you pay the price. Yes you had a job to do. Yes if you did not do it, someone else would have. But the someone else dose not carry that death on them. And the people that told you to do it, can say, we just were following orders. Funny that is what was said at Nuremburg.

It takes a LONG time for gas and electric to get cut off due to non-payment. They will send you several notices and the final one has the drop dead due date.

Like they said, you should have paid by the due date. After all, you were given many notices.

they can't turn your gas off in the winter depending on where you live, in ma the winter months are nov 1 to march 15 sometimes depending on the winter april 15. I know trust me and if your 1 year old was an infant they definately can't shutt you off because you would have protection on it because of the baby, but once the baby is 12 months the protection would be off but they still can't turn the utilities off until the end of winter.
