There is a vacancy in the institution I work in which is one grade up than my present position, it has more responsbilities including staff and operation, and a bit more money. A good opps for self development and I want to take the challenge.

I like the boss, and I think I can work well with her. It seems that this job offers everything I desire - satisfaction, good working relationship, opps to contribute and a great boss. Although I enjoy what I'm doing now, the team never gets along with each other very well.

However, I don't know why I'm a bit hesitated. The job is also open to external candidates and there are few colleagues acting for the post already. I don't know if I stand a good chance.

I am confident in doing well and sort of confident that the boss knows of my ability. If I do not get it at the end, I will remain in the same team (which never gets along, and rumours will be flying everywhere). Does it matter? any views?

Well, I think you should think about what you want to do and forget about the other people and all the reasons you might not succeed. Simply decide what would be best for you and then set out to accomplish whatever is necessary to achieve it.

Regarding confidence, it always amazes me what people can achieve when they have confidence. Sometimes there is no rational reason for the person's confidence, but they often succeed anyway. Seems like a pretty important attribute to me.

Keep looking for things you want, and go after these things. Why? Well, why not???

Apply for it.

Last week a job one step up from what I am doing became available - the closing date is tomorrow, it is open to both Internal and External Applicants. I have applied for it. When ever the current post holder goes off on holiday, I do bits of the job. I sent a note to my supervisor saying that I had asked HR for an Application Form, and that I didn't want to be doing my currant job forever, but wanted to stay with the company.

If you dont go for this job you will never know and it will be irrelevant! I heard a good saying recently 'feel the fear but do it anyway' go for it and if you dont succeed you could always look outside of your current company, i have just done the same as you in a similar environment and im glad i did.
