a) You're told that an adult ticket costs X cents, and that a child ticket is 30 cents less than this. So a child ticket is just X - 30 cents, no matter what X is.

b) This person bought one adult ticket plus three child tickets. If an adult ticket costs X cents and the child tickets each cost (X-30) cents, then the total is going to be the price of an adult ticket plus three times the cost of a child ticket. This would be X + 3*(X-30). You can simplify this expression:

X + 3*(X-30)
X + 3*X - 3*30
X + 3*X - 90
4X - 90

You can't simplify it any futher, so that's your answer: 4X-90.

Adult ticket costs:

x (in cents)

Child ticket cost 30 cents less than an adult ticket:

A) x - 30 (in cents)

Adult plus 3 children:

x + (x - 30) + (x - 30) + (x - 30) =

x + x + x + x - 30 - 30 - 30 =

B) 4x - 90

(or if you want to say that x is in dollars, then each child's ticket is x - 0.30, so you'd get 4x - 0.90 instead. Just remember, units make a difference...otherwise you might think the adult ticket cost $5, and the children's tickets cost $5 - $30 = negative $25...)

A) Let adults ticket be x. childs ticket is x - 30
B) one adult and three children. x + 3(x - 30), or x + (x - 30) + (x - 30) + (x - 30). Drop the parentheses, x + x - 30 + x - 30 + x - 30. Group together, x + x + x+ x - 30 - 30 - 30. Simplify. 4x - 90.

x = 10
x-.30 = 7
x-.30(3) = 21
If x = 10 and Mr. Smith takes his three children to the exhibit, Mr. Smith should pay 31 dollars to attend with his children.

x -.30 = cost of the child's ticket
