Yes you can, but if you want something even more effective, get your self some egg-crate-style foam rubber mattress covers. They will block the sound better than just egg crates. If you have a few extra bucks, and want to have studio-grade quality soundproofing, you can use a product called Son-ex. Son-ex is the professional grade product that is used on radio, and recording studio walls. All it really is, is a denser quality foam rubber that absorbs sound better. It is available at any broadcast supply company such as Broadcast Supply Worldwide.. etc.

I beg to differ. This is a common misapprehension. Drummers, guitarists etc often improve the acoustics of a room ( reduce the echo) by covering the walls with egg cartons. Especially the "home studio" brigade. But it does NOTHING to reduce the noise nuisance for those who live on the other side of the wall.
Those who say otherwise, do not know what they are talking about ( which is typical of Yahoo answers, incidentally)

Please don't, they are not fire resistant.
If you are bent on using them, and have them already, you can soak them in water glass (sodium silicate solution) to render them fire resistent. But fire resistent foam would be superior, even fiberglass would be better than the cartons.
(The egg cartons have a good broken up surface, but they are a relatively dense cardboard. Softer material would absorb sound better.)

Yes you can....the little pyramid-y shapes deflect all the sound waves.
Probably every struggling garage band in the world has had to do this when they were low on cash!

Not completely. Scattering the sound helps a bit though.
