The key difference is the style or ambiance of the trim.
The Elegance is the traditional Mercedes-Benz luxury trim, and is similar to what you might also find in a Jaguar.
The Avantgarde is more sporty, perhaps more modern, intended to more closely match the ambiance you might find in a BMW or Audi.
In terms of standard equipment, comparing the UK-spec E280CDi in Elegance and Avantgarde trims, the differences are as follows:
The Elegance has cloth seats as standard, the Avantgarde has part-leather seats.
The Elegance has halogen headlamps, the Avantgarde has xenon headlamps (a £570 option on the Elegance).
The Avantgarde has sport suspension.
The Elegance costs £500 less than the Avantgarde.

I work for Mercedes and Neil's answer is as good as you'll get! The main differences depend on the options on the car anyway more than the Classic/Elegance/Avantgarde bit.
Avantgarde does have blue glass as well though (not on A/B class for the pedants out there!) and that is the worht the extra money for me!! LOL!

Trim. Elegance trim has more wood inside, different wheels, and more 'luxury' options. Avantgarde is the 'sporty' option. Usually means, 'aluminium' trim inside, chunkier wheels, more spoilers, and stiffer suspension.
