Why is Beyonce's role of Deena considered the lead when the story is about Effie? Is it just because Beyonce is a bigger name and was top billed? I personally think Jennifer Hudson was the lead.

Exactly...they had an article in JET magazine explaining all that...Jennifer stole the show...Beyonce's daddy probably paid them to make her the star...as always.

I agree, the Effie was the main character but Beyonce character was getting all the publicity-but at least the awards shows recognized Jennifer Hudson and her portrayal of Effie-and awarded her best supporting actress

also some people believe that skinnier and prettier persons should be leads
