I saw an experiment to test if gold fish were able to "remember".

they put food on one end of the tank every day so the fish knew to go there for food. then they would put dividers in the tank separating the fish from the food.

the dividers had a hole in it. so the fish could pass though.

they would add several dividers with hols in different locations

after a few days they would switch the dividers and see if the fish would swim for where the holes used to be.

good luck with you experiment.
