People believe in a religion because it gives them a reason to why they are here. It also gives people hope that there is a better place after here. If people suffer a lot in this life they feel that their next life will be better and religion helps people cope with this life. It is depressing thinking that this is our only life. However some people use religion to control people and that is where I think it is wrong. In Saudi Arabia some men have more than one wife which I feel is really wrong and they use religion to belittle women.

It's a mechanism in the mind that makes us always believe there is a chance of survival our advance comprehension will even make things up if it means the survival of the conscious in downed moments, and after death even if it's not real.
Animals notice reoccurring patterns and often associate that pattern to the logic around it. We humans can associate environmental logic with belief systems. Since the dawn of ages humans have tried to comprehend what cannot be explained through logic that is far into the imagination.
It would explain in the beginning how almost every god took an animal like form expressing it's abilities as well. Now that we've advanced so has the beliefs. The god is now invisible. And we all know what is invisible is very hard to prove or disprove.

because the truth's too scary for them. believing in things like god and doing religious activites keep people in a bubble and protected from the terror of life - people are given something to talk about which isn't harmful to other believers; people have somewhere safe to go (church) and have something to do with their time (pray).
Most people are turned off when they hear the word god or religion etc., and this in itself demonstrates how being religious acts as a deterrent against the badness of life. Furthermore religious faith and belief can make a lot of money for some people as many benefit financially from the beliefs of others. In return people have more 'security'

Personally I have studied many different faiths and looked into the philosophical arguments on the subject of religion. I arrived at my beliefs based upon what I have studied and read. By gathering evidence I have decided what seems most logical to me and my faith is based upon this. I do not follow religion blindly and I do not conform to an organised religious group. I do believe in God, but in a way I believe in MY GOD and that is important to me.

Believe is a question of faith and a religion sometimes made a strong way to find God.

Religious faith draws you closer to God. You will find peace and love beyond words. When you have strong faith, you can overcome a lot of things that non-believer cannot handle. Faith is a substance of hope; without faith it is impossible to please God – for we live by faith not by sight, as any Christian would say it.
Roman 1:17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Brainwashing. People are brought up to believe in some sort of god or other. It gets into them, we can all be fooled, but if we have been fooled and come to the through the veil, it will be harder for others to fool us a second time, if we learn, that is when we wake up and see the truth.

There has been plenty of reseach concerning this in recent years. Much anecdotal evidence has been gathered, as has a quantity of scientific fact.
Having a belief, or adhering to some doctrine, and then praying or being prayed for. ALL these things add to the well being of the body and the soul. They cause us to live longer.

I dunno, maybe they're afraid of the fact that once you die thats it and you cease to exist so they choose to believe in a God and an afterlife that allows you to continue on.
Personally I don't believe but at the same time I don't think that people who do believe are idiots are anything like that. Who knows - maybe they're right!

It's reassures them in the brutal face of reality. It's especially useful for the dumb and uneducated to keep contented and working hard despite the strong feeling this universe has no real purpose.
