No, there are no problems with SMG II. The dealer will do updates to the software periodically, but mechanically, there are SMG II cars with 100K + miles and still going strong. There are a couple threads on this topic in the e46 section on m3forum.com if you want to read more.

(e36 cars had SMG I; e46 cars had SMG II; the new M5 has SMG III)

ABSOLUTELY: SMG transmissions had a number of problems when they first came out. If your car is a car with U.S. Specs, you should go straight away to your nearest dealer and get the transmission repaired under warranty. Most car dealers do not deal with today's complex transmissions, and do a complete transmission exchange all in one day. There is usually a small warranty charge for this kind of service. If the dealer can prove that you have caused the transmission damage from lack of maintenance or mis-use, he may try to assess you some of the costs. Look to see what your standard four year 50,000 mile warranty specifically says about transmissions.

If your wondering if they simply are problem prone I would venture to say from the many M3's we have sold over the last so many years all with varying amounts of miles they are very reliable Now they may not be not the most fun to drive slowly but great when the light turns green and you can Bam! Bam! bam! through the gears
