Search engines use a highly complicated algorithm and look at on-page and off-page factors when ranking pages in the results.
On-page:
This is what your web page has on it. Do you have a title, headings and text that has a certain key-phrase in them? (By key-phrase I mean the words the person is searching for in the search engine.)

Off-page:
These are the pages across the internet that link to your page. The more links you have, the higher the search engines will rank you.

Hopefully with enough links and optimized on-page text your site will be on the first page.

It's all about Search Engine Optimization - which is actually VERY easy, when you have some help.......

I am using a company called Sitesell. This is the very first time I have built a website, so I needed a company who could take me by the hand, step by step!

I have nothing but praise for them! They make EVERYTHING so easy! They supply all of the online training, simple (yet incredibly sophisticated tools) and excellent support.

The cost is just $299 (£170) per year That includes all of the above plus domain registration. They even supply the templates for designing your site! And don't worry about html coding or other techy stuff as that's all taken care of for you!

My site is only 9 months old. It is already very highly ranked by the major search engines and is attracting up to 1000 hits a day! Plus it generates an income which not only covers the costs, but actually shows a healthy profit!

pay for a search term listing (PPC) with Google for example.

no guarantee you will be number one, but it is possible if you bid correctly for the right term.
