1 - PS2

PS2 has the best third party support and has sold the most consoles worldwide. The amount of great exclusives for the system puts it ahead of any other console out there. Xbox heads will claim "But Halo pwns all!!!11! Stoopid noob!!1!" or something brilliant to that extent. Yes, Halo is the best exclusive for any system but it doesn't make up for Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and Guitar Hero which is why the PS2 is the best old gen console.

2 - Xbox

The Xbox had a pretty good run. Halo was the game of this generation and it had pretty good third party support. Problem was most of the shared titles played better on PS2. It was a good system, nevertheless, and the fact that it could easily be modded made it all the better. Still, it didn't match the exclusives of the PS2, something which Microsoft has seemingly solved in the 360 vs. PS3 debate.

3 - Gamecube

Nintendo, as always, had the best in house games. The problem is, as always, that is all they had. The GC was an underrated console but is still finishes last of the three. The problem is if you don't want to play Mario or Zelda you are up a creek as far as third party support goes. Great cross platform games like the GTA series never made it over to GC and subsequently made the console a secondary unit.

1 Xbox
2 Gamecube
3 PS2

Personally I think the gamecube has more games, Marios, Zeldas, Metroids but Xbox has Xbox live and a lot more graphically better games. PS2 is a non issue anymore.

1. PS2 (Great gameplay, nice semi- portability, plays CD's and DVD's, you can play online, just need the ISP, nice graphics and some good games like the Ratchets, if you're into those ones, but only 2 controller ports.)
2. GameCube (Nice Marios and Zeldas, I'm into those, not very portable, though, and the controllers are loud. Good for kids and multiplaying.)
3. X- Box (Now these are just plain dumb. You need a membership for X- Box Live just to play online, CD-R audio discs are not compatible with them, awkward controllers, you need a remote for DVD playback, and they're big, heavy, and bulky.)
