Howstuffworks (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/hardware-channel.htm ) is a pretty good starting resource. Spending time at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer ) may also prove fruitful. Actually, one of the best ways to learn about the insides of a computer is to look at it from a perspective of how to build a computer from scratch. You don't actually have to build one, but just approach your reading from such a viewpoint.

Some good sites are Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/index.html ) and whatever Google throws at you (http://www.google.com/search?q=build+own+computer+guide ).

A computer is basically a case, a power supply, cooling systems like fans or water cooling, a motherboard, a processor, a graphics card, a sound card, a network interface card, one more hard drives, and one or more optical drives, and a whole lot of wires. If you understand the function of each component I listed, you'll have a good basic understanding of the guts of a computer.

.Techspot.com has a great bunch of people responding to questions. No matter where he learns, what he learns will lead to other questions.
Help him join the forums and let him ask away.
I go to this forum ALL the time when the PC's go South
