If someone leaves an item for cleaning lets say a suit or soemthing. Or leaves something at a repair shop to be fixed and does not come to claim it.

How long do you have to hold onto it before you can sell it, without worrying about that person coming back to claim it.

I have such an item and it's been 3 years. Phone calls are not returned and registered mail goes unanswered also.

You are thinking about a mechanics lein. The laws vary from state to state.

The business should have a published policy about such items, which is posted in a conspicuous place for customers to read. It sounds like you have no such policy, so I would advise you to create one.

Often this is covered in the contract for service. There is a clause that says "if not claimed in six months, may be sold or otherwise disposed of".

If you didn't do that, it depends what the item is that you have. If it has substantial resale value, seek legal advice.

You can sell it after 3 years for sure. I would think the minimum time would be 1 year after notification.
