Winzip and other applications like it condense a number of files into a smaller one. Think of a briefcase: you put files in the briefcase so you can carry them all at the same time. Same thing here.

It's especially helpful if you need to send someone more than one file over email. "Zip-em-up" and send the zipped file in the email instead of each file separately.

Also, with the advent of Windows XP, "zipped" folders are already supported without WinZip or WinRar, or anything to that nature.

Overall: you don't need WinZip. Just use Windows zipping utility.

this is an example: you have five song files in mp3 format and you dont really care about the sound quality as long as its listenable (and you have no plans to edit them or anything). every single of them are 2mb in size and to send them as individual file will cost you 10mb of sending and receiving (technically) individual files. you want to email those 5 songs to your friend and would like to make it simpler by using winzip. what you could do is use winzip software and zip the music files (all 5 of them at once), give it a name (eg:music.zip) and pitch it to your frens via email. it also will compress the files into one single file and guess what... the size will be smaller too, probably by few percent but still... it'll be around 8 or 9 mb, instead of 10. when received, your frens will have to use the same software like winzip (in order to unzip the files) and voila.. after unzipping them, they will receive your 5 songs and arent technologies wonderfull...

WinZip is a free compression tool to shrink the size of files for electronic transfer either via download or for copying to a floppy disc. The standard filename extention is .ZIP. Zip files are commonly used for decreasing the download time of large programs and for sharing collections of pictures.

WinZip compresses and uncompresses files into .zip folders. It can also encrypt files in .zip folders. You don't need it if you have Windows XP or better because all OS's after and including XP can do everything that WinZip does but better and for free.

Files can be compressed so they use less disk space, this is very useful when sending emails since its not easy to send large files, well winzip is a tool that can be used to compress files, or it can aslo be used to decompress compressed files.
